N.F.L. Ropes In Jennifer Lopez And Shakira For Super Bowl Event
In a last-ditch effort, NFL has joined hands with Jay-Z to have Jennifer Lopez and Shakira to perform as Super Bowl in Miami in February 2020. N.F.L. wants to salvage the cachet of its halftime show with the help of entertainment provided by the music impresario. Jay-Z would also support Inspire Change, league’s social activism campaign.
Why did league call Jay-Z for music?
Last year, no artist including Jay-Z performed at NFL Super Bowl because of the Colin Kaepernick incident. The artist fraternity denied performing as a show of support for Colin, who accused the league of blackballing because of his protests during the national anthem.
Colin Kaepernick was the former 49ers quarterback but became a free agent in March 2017. But he couldn’t find a new team after becoming a free agent. Finally, he realized that he was standing on the wrong side of the fence and settled collusion cases against the N.F.L. in February. He and safety Eric Reid paid several million dollars to settle the cases. Colin and Eric are now with Carolina Panthers.
Deal with Jay-Z
The N.F.L. has high hopes from the deal that can get it through the Colin controversy. The lukewarm reception challengers received for Maroon 5 and Travis Scott during a halftime act last year, prodded the league to reach out a settlement with Colin non-involvement of music community was spoiling its events.
Jennifer Lopez
The 50-year old singer is quite excited about the opportunity of displaying her star power at Super Bowl. She has some big reviews of her career and she has already proven her role as a ringleader of a swindling group of strippers in “Hustlers”. Her role as a ringleader sparked speculations that she could get her first Academy Award.
Shakira at NFL Super Bowl
The 42-year old singer-dancer is best known for her electronic music hits. Her 2009 album “She Wolf” reached Top 10 in the United States. But her star power has waned a bit in the last five years. Here Super Bowl is an opportunity to her. Shakira could lift her star power using this the Super Bowl as a platform to prove that she can still do magic on stage.
She recently won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album last year when her album “El Dorado” made a hit. But Shakira was more popular as a judge on “The Voice”, a reality show. Meanwhile, Jay-Z didn’t rule out the possibilities of performing in the Super Bowl in the future.
