Keep Your Skin Moist And Healthy During Winter

Winter could be harsh on your skin. If you leave the skin exposed to the low temperatures, it would result in dry and cracking of skin; chopped lips; itchy legs and rough hands. But it won’t take you much time, if you decide to take care of your skin. Dr Rinky Kapoor, consultant dermatologist, cosmetic dermatologist and dermato-surgeon has some skin care tips for winter.

Avoid bathing with hot water as it strips skin of essential moisturizers. You should use lukewarm water and reduce your bath time to 10 minutes and never bath for more than once a day.

  • Use body wash that contains moisturizer and buy the soap that is natural and organic.
  • After shower, pat dry your body and apply a moisturizer immediately.
  • Avoid sponges and body brushes prevent skin damage.
  • You can go for light peels in winters. It is a great way to exfoliate the dry thick layer and reveal smooth and supple skin.
  • Avoid coming into contact with fabrics that are irritating. You can wear cotton shirts under sweaters and coats to prevent allergies with fabrics.
  • Buy an alcohol-based cleanser and toner for daily use. Or use milk-based cleansers that can help keep the skin smooth but never wear clay-based masks as they can pull the moisture out.
  • The thin skin of hands, heels and feet is more susceptible to damage. Moisturizing and covering the skin with socks and gloves is the best way to prevent skin from cold temperature.
  • Never forget to apply sunscreen when going out in winter. Wear sunscreen even when the weather is foggy.
  • Drink plenty of water to hydrate your skin and replenish the nutrients lost to cold temperature.

Select the right moisturizer that has the following ingredients

  • Humectants – ceramides, glycerin, sorbitol and hyaluronic acid – attract moisture to the skin.
  • Petroleum jelly, silicone lanolin and mineral oil seal the moisture on the skin.
  • Emollients – lauric acids and linoleic – fill the spaces between cells to prevent cracking. It keeps the skin smooth and moist for a long time.

Dr Rinky Kapoor recommends oil-based cream or cream-based moisturizer but it should be thick in consistency. Thick cream works like a protector for soft skin.

People with dry skin should use hyaluronic acid-based moisturizer because of its super hydrating properties. Also, it doesn’t make skin look greasy.

Some people have oily skin. For them, there are lighter formulas made with gels and serums. These light formulas are great on oily skin because they don’t make things heavy on skin.

Those with sensitive skin should use the moisturizer that contains antioxidants and is fragrance free.

For combination skin, moisturizer that don’t make skin look congested is a great option. Finally, you would need a cleanser or oil-based cleanser but it should be protective and not greasy.
